Virgin has made choosing a tariff simple by offering a limited number of packages for both 12 and 18 month contracts. The packages offered are very varied so they cater to everyone’s phone needs. Nokia has opted to make the keys as big as possible, which sounds sensible but actually isn’t. The Blackberry Curve, the ugly-but-practical keyboard class leader, proves that what makes for a good keyboard is big gaps between keys, not big keys. Nokia, the Finnish mobile handset maker, unveil seven new phones for the emerging mobile markets. Nokia has always had an upper hand in the emerging markets, but faces acute competition from vendors like ZTE and Samsung Electronics. Nokia N-series phones have had barcode reader software on them for several years (oh, and they can do cut and paste as well). And there’s a Dutch company, Shotcode, who for several yeahave been providing a reader to run on all sorts of phones, and a service to allow you to create barcodes.
Personally, I think it’s because Koreans love the technology so much that they want us to share in the goodness. And on the American side, I think local TV broadcasters are concerned about maintaining their relevance as television moves into an Internet-protocol, time-shifted, Slingboxed world. Perhaps PMA 2010 will be the start of serious mobile photography. Perhaps as an indication of users’ growing attachment to these devices, the number of people looking to customize the appearance and sound of their phones is also on the increase.
